Digital darkroom for beginners

A rendition of Koi Carp, taken by rapidy rotating the camera while using a slow shutter speed

More images are spoiled by poor processing on the computer than by poor camera technique. Incorrect colour correction and sharpening technique, a lack of understanding with regard to image re-sizing issues, incorrect digital workflow … are just a few of the reasons people spoil otherwise good original photos. Too many people are also working under the miconception that “any old photo is good enough, I can always fix it on the computer….” Well guess what? You can’t!! Garbage in, equals garbage out!

On this intensive one-day workshop I will teach you to:

  • Set your camera’s menu items to ensure the best possible image files
  • Understand how to read a histogram to obtain the best exposure, both in the camera and in your post- processing software
  • How to re-size an image for printing or e-mail/web use
  • Basic colour correction techniques
  • Correcting compositional errors, i.e. staightening an image with a sloping horizon, removal of offending objects, scratches and blemishes on an image
  • Correcting for over and under-exposed images
  • How to set up a filing and archiving system for your images and recommendations on databasing software

This workshop is limited to four students so everyone receives the maximum personal attention. If you have your own laptop computer, you are very welcome to bring it along to use on this course, or you may use one of our in-house computers. If you choose to bring your own computer, you must have either Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Elements installed. (I recommend at least version CS or later for Photoshop, or Adobe Elements version 6 for Windows or version 4 for Mac.)

Price now only $150

These workshops all take place in our fully equipped digital photo classroom on Gabriola Island, a 20-minute ferry ride from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. I can pick students up at the ferry if you prefer to cross as a foot passenger. We can also offer overnight b&b accommodation for those travelling from farther afield on a first come first served basis. Please call 250 247 9109 for details and availability. Workshops commence at 9.00 am and finish around 5.00 pm. Beverages are provided, but please bring a packed lunch

“I attended the Photoshop Basic and Advanced courses and they were a big boost in productivity and knowledge for how to make my pictures better with less time spent on each file. I attended one of the first equestrian workshop courses put on by Peter and learned a lot. Then I worked for him at Spruce Meadows and now I am his partner as the official photographers for Thunderbird Showpark in Langley.” – Darren Reeves – Victoria
